Make sure you understand your code on both a local and global level.

Learn by doing, by actual writing and designing code independently.

Learning by doing refers to a theory of education expounded by American philosopher John Dewey. It's a hands-on approach to learning, meaning students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn. --wikipedia

A great start for a new project would be creating something simple, or perhaps even make a clone of something.

Use project management and create a game design document, also prioritize by creating a minimalistic demo, share demos with friends and watch them play is also great feedback.
