Can I force a npm build to fail under some custom circumstances?

I'm trying to generate different builds from the same code base, each of which relies on the existence and valorization of some environment variables.

Can I make the build (I mean the "npm build" process) fail if those variables aren't properly set?
I also run the build process inside a Dockerfile and being able to make the image creation fail would be a plus, but a secondary objective.
