Easier way to change background and default foreground text colors

Based on feedback from @janosh in #16 and @smockle in real life, it seems like there should be an easier way to customize the background color without using replaceColor. (Actually, I think the background and default text colors don’t currently get run through replaceColor at all, an unintentional oversight.)
