Cleans up usages of some signatures that have been deprecated in core. Also cleans up a couple of usages of our own deprecated APIs.

Cleans up usages of some signatures that have been deprecated in core. Also cleans up a couple of usages of our own deprecated APIs. This also fixes some cases where the type was resolving to
any.
