I need to revert this because in google3 we have a local modification to this code that depends on the Version symbol being imported from @angular/core

@mmalerba I don't follow. This workaround for the VERSION was just introduced four days ago. Even though I don't have enough context how something could depend on us bringing in the Version symbol, can't we just remove that modification in google3? Can you give more context (maybe through Slack?)
