Merge tob and bottom navbar? UI / UX / Navigation overhaul #1006

There are some issues with the current layout:

  • The resource context menu is hard to discover, at the top right of the screen. This is a very powerful button that I want users to become deeply familiar with. It allows them to share, edit, delete, etc.
  • We have two navigation bars (the top one, with hierarchy, and the bottom one, with search and other actions)
  • The sidebar toggle is sometimes odd on the bottom bar. It feels more at home in the top-left corner, or have a button inside de sidebar to close the bar.

But this design of having a bottom-bar has some merit:

  • On mobile, we want users to be able to reach the most important actions
  • Breadcrumbs / hierarchy are conventionally shown at the top.

New designs & Consideration

  • only show current resource name. Instead of showing the full hierarchy, only show the current resource name.
  • replace breadcrumbs bar with move up button. If we hide the parent, we should show a button to open the parent. Maybe on large screens we can still show the parent title somehow.
  • hide the URL / subject. Saves a lot of space. But also: kind of hurts the browser aspect, and hurts the discoverability of the "subject" concept.
