This reverts commit 754e896.

The formatting applied in the above commit created a nightmare for reviewing #112. We're going to temporarily revert the black formatting applied in #161, then reapply after #112 gets merged.

When we reapply the formatting, we'll add testing and Github actions that check formatting automatically—hopefully reducing the burdon on contributors.
