I decided to have separate sections for code/doc mentoring and speaker mentoring mostly because I wanted speaker mentoring to show up in the index.

This sentence sounds a bit weird… to me. Maybe check with a native english speaker?

@sstok It's "give some [one on one advice]" in this sentence. Though I think it should be "one-on-one" in that case (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/one-on-one).

A good first step might be giving a talk at a local user group to a
smaller crowd that one knows more intimately. As a next step give
a talk at conference in your mother tongue.

These two sentences aren't constructed in the same way. I would change the second one to "A next step could be giving a talk at a conference...".

Taking into account the comment of @weaverryan on the previous sentence, this sentence would become "A next step could be to give a talk at a conference...".

As an FYI, this sentence is of a passive voice, maybe it could be rewritten into an active voice. But I myself am no star in grammar and copyrighting 😅

To me, the passive voice gives this part a bit of a footnote feeling. It sounds good as is: not something you should do, but some more information in case you're interested.

I'm not sure which is better, though "who" seems more personal.
