This PR aims to fix #6104. It is mutually exclusive with #6108.

Briefly, this approach avoids masking functions by making stage() a proper function that changes behaviour depending on the context.

I quite like this approach because it replaces some very arcane function-masking incantations with a more mundane closure trick.
