This is mechanical test refactor that is part of #3390, but extracted out to make it easier to review. It adds a test helper that hides some of the indirection that a functional Query API brings with it.

Most of this PR is renaming query to query1 for local variables to avoid name clashes.

No functional changes. The new test helper is in the very last file.
